Blog #10 Plus Project #3

I loved this class, one of my favorite pieces of technology that I wasn't already introduced to was synchronous video chatting, it has come in handy not only for keeping in touch with my parents but also doing face to face interviews for a couple of my other assignments for school, I wouldn't have even thought of this as an option before this class. I will definitely be careful with technology in my classroom and make sure that I'm not just using it to use it but for a specific purpose that I want students to learn. I don't have any unanswered questions at this time but with some of the technological skills I've learned in this class I'm sure I will be able to find the help I need when the time comes.

Finished assignment:

Creating a Principle based Kitchen

Directions: Use Google sketch-up to create a 3D rendering of a kitchen design that follows the five principles of design. Explain how your design follows each principle.

Principles of Design:

1. Scale and Proportion
-uses human scale making sure that everything is in proportion to the height, reach, and special necessities of the average human.

2. Emphasis
-the kitchen appliances are the things that provide emphasis to different sections of the kitchen.

3. Balance
-uses asymmetrical balance high cabinets in one corner and low breakfast bar with sink in the other.

4. Harmony
-use of complementary tile color, wood construction of cabinets, and kitchen appliances; natural wood, tan ceramic slate style tile, granite countertops that don’t clash with the tiles, and metal appliances with matching metal handles and knobs for the cupboards and drawers.
5. Rhythm
-Repetition of similar colors and patterns throughout the room draws the eye to them in rhythmic patterns, the cupboards surround the room, the eye will travel to the appliances along the chain of cupboards creating rhythm in the room.

How comfortable would you be in this kitchen?
-I would be very comfortable in as it has plenty of negative space to travel around in as well as storage space within the cupboards and drawers, I am also more comfortable in kitchens made of quality goods, it makes it feel more like home to me.

How comfortable would you be in this kitchen?

So the sound didn't work, I just figured out that my built in webcam doesn't have a built in mic. I just said that video would really be useful if you were to do a section of french cuisine you could have a french chef do a quick video on how to use something like butter in french cooking, etc.

Synchronous Video

I talked with my dad on skype today! I actually really liked it, I'd heard about skype before but had never thought about it really until it was assigned for us to do, and I got to chat with my dad, who I haven't seen for a while now, which was fantastic. I think that this could definitely be used in teaching, it would make it possible for lecturers of a small high school class to present without having to travel, so you could have the students talk to people from other countries, cultures, and backgrounds to help teach the concept you are currently working on. Imagine having a cooking class where a french chef is the teacher for the day!

Blog #6

Without copyright we have no way to maintain the rights to our intellectual property, others could take credit for our work and ideas with no way to stop them and make a mint off of our hard work. I think that it is very important in our society where mass downloading/ freeloading occurs with very little to be done that can stop it. With copyright we are able to penalize those that would deprive us of monetary gain and personal accreditation for our work.

Blog #5

I have not personally used video in the classroom, however, my mother has and she has found it to be a really good resource as a teaching tool. She has her third graders read a book (ex. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Summer of the Monkeys, etc.) and then gets permission to show those movies to her students and they take notes on what the differences are. I've never really made a movie before, my mom uses windows movie maker to make our family movie every year and I've helped her with that each year and know generally how to use it. I think that videos enhance learning through visual and audio stimulation combined in a way that can aid students in their learning.

So, I know this is super late, but I still wanted to talk a bit about personal learning networks. I think that they are fantastic and can be such a great resource as a teacher. If you have a solid network set up you are able to draw on that to help you learn and grow as a teacher and as a person. It helps to plan lessons, activities, and good learning experiences for students.

Website

Here is the link to my lovely website. It was created to be a work in progress, as people in my ward give me more recipes it will fill out better and probably have more categories under each of the food categories that are already there. Who knows, I may even put instructive videos of how to make a pie crust and such on there! Any way, take a look: http://sites.google.com/site/byucookbook88thward/

Enjoy!
And feel welcome to snag recipes while you're at it!

Blog #2

I think that the concept of Lifelong learning is key to our survival in this world. My grandpa used to say that the sooner you stop searching for new things the sooner you stop progressing. I think that RSS Feeds could be very helpful in learning the news in specific fields of interest. It would make keeping up with the newest teaching methods and technologies much easier. I think it would also be nice for things like new recipes and sewing projects for example, which would be a great help with putting together lessons for Family and Consumer Sciences classes.
