Without copyright we have no way to maintain the rights to our intellectual property, others could take credit for our work and ideas with no way to stop them and make a mint off of our hard work. I think that it is very important in our society where mass downloading/ freeloading occurs with very little to be done that can stop it. With copyright we are able to penalize those that would deprive us of monetary gain and personal accreditation for our work.
